I prioritize building rapport and establishing trust with my counterparts throughout the negotiation process. Of course, each side wants to maximize profit, but I find there are more “symbiotic” approaches that you can use to foster long-term relationships and financially advantageous & efficiently executed deals. I also like to leverage VARs (Value Added Reseller) whenever possible. A really good VAR (and there aren’t many) can work with you as a key strategic advisor and often have many opportunistic ideas to drive the deals.
As alluded to above, many approach technical negotiations as a win/lose situation. Remember one thing…a salesperson will not execute a deal that hurts them (of course there are always exceptions, but that’s not the norm). It’s OK to do the right thing by your company, and doing so may be uncomfortable during the negotiation process. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. If you are clear with your intentions, goals, and stand firm, you will find the common ground to lead to a win/win outcome. There are occasions where you may need to get creative to drive agreement value. This requires an innovative and collaborative mindset to find different ways to meet the needs of both sides. By exploring alternative options, brainstorming ideas, and finding common ground, I strive to craft solutions that maximize value and benefit for all stakeholders. This approach not only strengthens relationships but also paves the way for future collaboration and partnerships, driving long-term success.
